My PC has died

After over 5 years of 24/7 faithful service the motherboard has given up. I have been thinking about upgrading for a while as my old machine never ran Photoshop that well, it was running Vista 32bit on an AMD quad core with 4Gb of RAM, not ideal. Don’t get me wrong is wasn’t a cart horse, but not fantastic for editing lots of large images. I still don’t know if my internal hard drives are intact, but I can see no reason for them being corrupted, I’m just glad I have a backup (or two) of all my images etc. I always forget to backup my outlook pst file, so I have to dig that out of the old PC. Cant go losing e-mails from 2003.

Anyway I bit the bullet and ordered a custom build PC from I spent many hours looking at different setups and decided on an i7 CPU, overclocked to 4.2Ghz with 16Gb of fast memory, a fast SSD for Windows and Photoshop, with a 2Gb HDD for everything else. I will put my 2 existing storage drive in the new box giving 6.5Tb of space. I had to put a half decent graphics card in it too, so the kids can play games on cbeebies 😉

Gavin Hoey, renowned photographer and photoshop guru, created a Photoshop action to see how fast your computer is running Photoshop, my old PC managed to complete it in 12m 48s, the quickest PC are doing it in around 18-20 seconds! Hoping for a respectable speed from the new box, under 60 seconds and I will be happy.

So, I got the new box and re-ran the Photoshop benchmark a few times and get a reliable 28-29 seconds, so I am more than happy.
